Our Services for the Community
Settlement Services & Interpretation
“Somali Himilo Community” provides settlement services and other programs by providing seminars, meetings, counselling and other support services for refugees, immigrants and youths in need
Himilo staff or volunteers provide interpretation in Somali and Arabic languages (in person or by phone) whenever a community member needs assistance in communication with other offices or agencies to facilitate transactions.
Tutoring
Newcomer immigrants often have challenges to adapt to the Canadian education system that sometimes differs from education system of their countries of origin.
Therefore, “Somali Himilo Community” holds 4 nights per week of tutoring sessions to help its community member students catch up with their studies in different subjects like language, math and computer use.
“Somali Himilo Community” helps parents coordinates with school staffs to address parents concerns of their children’s education and discuss ways of improvement if there are difficulties.
Sports & Activities
Somali Himilo Community have two nights per week of soccer tournament. One is for the youth, and the other for the seniors. This program helps the community gather to improve their health and fitness.
We also arrange for the kids (end of school year activities) like trips to the zoo, and Canada’s Wonderland to entertain them during the school break or the holidays.
Housing Help
Somali Himilo Community assists the newcomer community members search and find affordable housing. It helps them with rental applications, public housing applications, and assist them to understand their rights & responsibilities in their rental contracts.
Partnership with Other Organization & Agencies
Somali Himilo Community partnerships with other communities in Niagara region, and other regions. We arrange conferences and participate in invited conferences to discuss community related issues and find ways to overcome challenges.
